Enzymes are proteins present in small Concentration in blood and act as specific catalysts in different bio-chemical reactions in the body. About one-third of human enzymes show electrophoretically detectable genic variations. Thus these biochemical Catalyst are increasingly being used in characterizing Indian population, both tribal and non-tribal and in resolving varied problems of forensics, especially those related to disputed parentage and criminal investigation requiring personal identification. Prof. H. K. Goswami, Chairman, Department of Genetics, Barkatullah University, Bhopal informed that a large body of enzyme variation data have now become available from different parts of India during the last three decades. However, many regions, especially states inhabiting a bulk of tribal population, have yet not been covered (except by laboratory at Bhopal on Haemoglobins).
